Observation Narrative
The habitat is a riverside dolomite outcrop that rises approximately 4 meters above mean water level and is scoured by occasional floods. Probably at least annually. Sparse vascular vegetation is characterized by scrubby, battered trees, the prairie grasses Andropogon gerardii and Panicum virgatum var. virgatum and the forbs Baptisia australis and Cerastium arvense ssp. velutinum. Two notably rare plants occur here: Muhlenbergia cuspidata, a grass of calcareous cliffs that is disjunct from southwestern Virginia, and Solidago rupestris, a globally uncommon and highly state rare goldenrod of rocky riverside habitats.
Mapped erroneously. Mapping units too fine to show localized outcrops.
No mineral soil present; sample could not be extracted. On the outcrop thin mats and crevices or organic matter and mosses are locally developed, supporting most of the herbaceous plants; a few gravel deposits occur at the lower edge of the plot
